Flashing and steady lights are not the same
A steady malfunction indicator means the emissions or powertrain system recorded a fault that needs diagnosis. A flashing light is the vehicle’s stronger warning that the current condition may cause damage if driving continues.
Active misfire is a common reason, but the light alone does not identify the failed part. Spark, fuel, air, compression, wiring, timing, and control faults can all produce misfire symptoms.
What to do immediately
Ease off the accelerator, avoid high RPM and heavy load, and move toward a safe stopping location. If the vehicle shakes strongly, loses power, smells of raw fuel, overheats, or makes a severe mechanical noise, shut it down and arrange assistance.
Do not continue a long drive to see whether the light clears. Unburned fuel can overheat the catalytic converter, and a severe mechanical or fuel problem can worsen quickly.
- Note whether the engine is shaking.
- Record speed, RPM, temperature, weather, and fuel level.
- Check for oil-pressure or temperature warnings.
- Do not open a hot cooling system.
- Do not clear codes before saving them.
Save the diagnostic evidence
Scan stored, pending, and permanent codes and save freeze-frame data. Cylinder-specific codes such as P0301 can narrow the first test, while P0300 indicates random or multiple-cylinder misfire. Neither code proves a spark plug or ignition coil is bad.
A technician may compare misfire counters, fuel trims, coil command, injector operation, compression, and intake leaks. Swapping a single component for a controlled test can be useful; replacing a full set of parts without evidence is not diagnosis.
When can the car be driven again?
Normal driving should resume only after the cause is understood, the engine runs normally, and the light no longer flashes. A stored code may remain after the immediate fault stops, so confirm the repair with an appropriate drive cycle and scan rather than relying only on the dashboard.
