Recognize the warning

A high-temperature gauge, red temperature symbol, warning message, steam, reduced-power mode, or coolant smell can indicate overheating. Air-conditioning performance may change, but it is not a reliable temperature measurement.

Follow the owner’s manual response. If temperature continues rising, steam is present, coolant is leaking, or the engine loses power, stop in a safe place and shut it off.

Avoid burn and traffic hazards

Do not remove a radiator cap, expansion-tank cap, hose, or cooling-system plug while the system is hot or pressurized. Hot coolant and steam can cause severe injury. Keep clear of electric cooling fans that can start unexpectedly.

If stopped near traffic, prioritize moving occupants to a safer location and contact roadside or emergency services as appropriate.

  • Turn on hazard lights.
  • Avoid opening the hood if steam or fire makes it unsafe.
  • Do not pour cold water onto a very hot engine.
  • Do not continue driving only because the gauge briefly drops.
  • Allow the vehicle to cool according to the manual before any level check.

What can cause overheating

Low coolant from leakage, airflow restriction, fan faults, thermostat problems, water-pump issues, belt problems, a blocked radiator, combustion leakage, and incorrect service procedures are possibilities. A low level is an effect that still needs a cause.

Scan data can confirm temperature and fan commands, but pressure testing, leak detection, flow checks, and combustion-gas testing may be needed. Never assume a thermostat is the cause from temperature alone.

Before driving again

The engine should cool, the correct level and mixture should be confirmed by the manufacturer procedure, and the leak or control fault should be understood. Severe overheating can damage gaskets, cylinder heads, lubricants, wiring, and emissions components.

If it overheats again, stop. Repeatedly adding coolant without repairing the leak can lead to a larger failure and creates a risk of sudden coolant loss.
