TPMS Warning Light: Pressure Check, Flashing Light, and Reset Basics
How to distinguish low tire pressure from a TPMS system fault and set pressure using the driver-door label.
Solid and flashing behavior
A solid tire-pressure warning generally means one or more monitored tires are significantly underinflated. A light that flashes for a period and then stays on commonly indicates a TPMS malfunction. The exact sequence and message must be confirmed in the owner’s manual.
Temperature changes can reduce pressure, but temperature does not rule out a puncture. Inspect the tire instead of repeatedly resetting the warning.
Check pressure correctly
Measure when tires are cold—before driving or after the vehicle has sat as defined by the manufacturer. Find the recommended front and rear pressures on the driver-door or door-jamb label. Do not use the tire sidewall maximum as the vehicle setting.
- Inspect tread and sidewalls for damage.
- Check every road tire and the spare when applicable.
- Set front and rear pressure to the vehicle label.
- Reinstall valve caps and check for leakage.
- Drive or perform the relearn procedure stated in the manual.
If the light returns
A pressure drop can come from a puncture, valve, bead leak, wheel damage, or temperature change. A malfunction can involve a sensor battery, incompatible wheel or sensor, damaged antenna or wiring, failed relearn, or control-module issue.
Direct systems measure pressure with wheel sensors; indirect systems estimate changes using wheel-speed behavior. Their reset and relearn procedures differ.
Tire safety is more than the light
TPMS does not replace regular pressure, tread, age, and damage checks. A tire may be unsafe before the warning threshold is reached, and some systems do not monitor the spare.
If a tire is visibly damaged, rapidly losing pressure, or causing handling changes, reduce speed and stop safely. Use roadside assistance or the manufacturer’s emergency procedure rather than driving on a dangerously deflated tire.
Official and primary sources
Use the exact vehicle owner's manual and service information before acting on a general guide.
This article is educational and cannot diagnose a vehicle. Stop driving when control, braking, steering, fuel containment, temperature, oil pressure, or another safety-critical condition is uncertain.
