P0420 Code: What to Test Before Replacing the Catalytic Converter

What P0420 tells you

P0420 is a generic powertrain code for catalyst-system efficiency below threshold on bank 1. The engine computer compares upstream and downstream oxygen-sensor behavior under specific operating conditions to estimate oxygen-storage performance.

The monitor result is valuable, but it is not a direct physical inspection. Exhaust leaks, mixture problems, misfires, sensor faults, oil burning, coolant contamination, and a damaged converter can affect the result.

Check these before buying a converter

Read every stored and pending code first. Resolve active misfire, fuel-trim, oxygen-sensor heater, air/fuel sensor, or exhaust-related codes before judging catalyst efficiency. Review the freeze frame to see load, temperature, speed, and fuel-control conditions when P0420 set.

  • Inspect for exhaust leaks before and near the sensors.
  • Review short- and long-term fuel trims.
  • Check misfire history and oil or coolant consumption.
  • Verify engine reaches normal operating temperature.
  • Inspect sensor wiring and connectors.
  • Compare upstream and downstream sensor data using the correct vehicle test procedure.

Why graph shape alone can mislead

A downstream sensor that resembles the upstream sensor can support a low-storage diagnosis, but sensor type, commanded fuel-control changes, scan-tool sampling rate, and manufacturer strategy matter. Some vehicles use wideband air/fuel sensors whose data should not be interpreted like a traditional narrowband sensor.

Do not condemn a converter from a universal voltage screenshot. Use the manufacturer test description, confirm no upstream cause remains, and verify sensor response when the specified test allows it.

Replacement and follow-up

If testing confirms a failed converter, correct the condition that damaged it before replacement. A new converter can fail again if the engine still misfires, burns oil, runs excessively rich, or leaks coolant into the exhaust.

Confirm legal and vehicle compatibility for replacement emissions parts. After repair, verify that related codes do not return and that the catalyst monitor completes under the applicable drive conditions.
